Piano Tuition for All
Me at my old home on my Knight upright, which has was built when I was 7 years old.
Welcome. Thank you for visiting my page. I would advise you read as much of this site as you can before making a decision to contact me.
NOTE; I am currently looking for new students in the Luton, Stevenage, Letchworth areas. Adults wanting to return to the instrument or adults having a dream of one day learning are especially welcome. Children over the age of 7, beginners and continuers.
I no longer teach ABRSM or Trinity examinations. However should a child or adult wish to do this I will get that pupil to a place where they can try them and see how they go. I will not be swayed by parents views, only the view and ability of their child.
I was trained as a classical pianist from the age of 6 years. I completed all eight of my ABRSM exams with distinction and have my Grade 5 Theory certificate. My ambition soon wavered as I discovered stage fright and was unable to continue with my classical pianist dream. However in teaching I found a new passion. My BA Honours is in English Literature and Creative Writing. I am also a professional artist. (see images below).
I have been teaching piano professionally for around 30 years. I do it because I love it, because the relationship between myself and a student is magic, and increasing their confidence and seeing them grow on their musical journey is a thrill for me and for them. I teach for a student's enjoyment and enrichment
You will need a keyboard to start lessons as I will be visiting you and teaching you in your home. Both electric and acoustic (the old fashioned upright) pianos are fine. You can rent these which is a good idea for the first year.
I also teach privately both English Literature and Creative Writing and am a professional artist. See images below.
I teach in an informal fun way which is why my lessons are 40 minutes instead of 30 to allow for any questions or talk. For youngsters starting out this is 20-30 minutes depending on their concentration abilities. If you are not enjoying the challenge of learning (and it is a challenge), then you a have chosen the wrong instrument.
If you identify as other than male or female I have absolutely no issue with that at all, and will fully support your choices and preferred pronouns.
I teach all genres and try to introduce music to students that they may have never considered before. I do teach the reading of musical notation, but also encourage composition, improvisation and learning by ear from day one. Also of great importance is listening to a wide range of music. Don't be afraid to listen to what you think you won't like or don't understand. Try to have an open mind when you learn and you may surprise yourself.
Below are three of my students. Left to right aged 9, 7 and 16 years. The 7 year old started when he was 6 as he had the focus and ability to concentrate for 10 minutes at a time. This is vital for learning.
I also have a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing plus experience as a professional graphic and fine artist. I give private sessions in these too, if you are interested or know someone who might be. Do pass on my details.
